Camping on the mountain

The hike to and from the Trolltunga cliff is quite long. Some hikers may wish to slow their pace and take two days, so as better to savour the mountain wilderness.

Trolltunga — camping in spectacular nature!

Sunsets in the mountains can be magical, especially on clear summer days, and during the night you can experience a profound tranquillity.

The wilderness is vulnerable

We ask that all campers show the utmost care and help us preserve our magnificent mountain wilderness. This environment is extremely vulnerable!

To minimise your environmental impact, choose your campsite carefully. We recommend pitching your tent at one of the sites that are clearly labelled with a tent symbol on the map.

Your campsite must be downhill from the trails, and well away from streams and lakes. Please respect signs indicating areas where camping is prohibited. These may be rest areas intended for use by all hikers, areas that are too close to private cabins, or areas with a particularly vulnerable environment. No camping is allowed near the parking lots or trailhead.

In order to reduce wear and tear on the vulnerable alpine vegetation, we request that you pitch your tent on bare rock, if possible. Regardless of where you camp, a good thick sleeping mat is an absolute must.

Make sure you have the right gear for your mountain trip!

A good night’s sleep in the mountains starts with the right equipment. Choose a lightweight and durable tent designed for mountain conditions—strong winds can easily tear apart cheap tents. If you get cold at night, you’ll return home with bad memories instead of great ones. Bring a warm, high-quality sleeping bag and a good sleeping pad, as a lot of body heat is lost through the ground.

The downside of camping in the mountains is that you’ll have to carry a much heavier backpack.

Guided hike to Trolltunga

If you don’t want to carry all the gear yourself, a guided tour is a tempting alternative. Both Trolltunga Active and Trolltunga Adventures offer guided overnight hikes.

There are many benefits to choosing a guided tour. Experienced guides ensure a safe journey, share exciting stories, and provide insight into the fascinating mountain landscape surrounding Trolltunga.

Where can you buy or rent equipment?

Invest in high-quality gear from a sporting goods store—there are several great options in Odda. You can also rent professional equipment from Trolltunga Active in Skjeggedal. For a more sustainable choice, you can find well-used equipment at Finn.no.

Campfires, toilets and waste

Bring food that does not require cooking or use a small camping stove. Keep in mind that open fires are prohibited between April 15 and September 15.

There are no public toilets in the mountains. Every hiker must carry out all waste and dispose of it in the trash bins at the parking area. This includes cans, bottles, and all food packaging – as well as used toilet paper!

Camping recommendations

  • Bring a high-quality tent, a warm sleeping bag, and a thick sleeping pad.
  • Pack extra clothing and windproof, waterproof gear.
  • Bring plenty of food, water, and some snacks.
  • Set up camp below the trail and at a safe distance from streams and lakes.
  • Toilet visits should also take place far away from water sources.
  • No open fires between April 15 and September 15.
  • Follow the instructions of park rangers and wilderness guides.
  • Be responsible—carry out all waste, including used toilet paper, and dispose of it at the parking area.
  • Avoid polluting streams and lakes!
  • Respect nature and leave no trace!
